Title: Developing deep knowledge and creativity: How will ICT help?

With an ever-increasing emphasis on testing and standardization, education systems around the world ought to be seriously wary of the dangers of Unproductive Success—an illusion of learning in high performance. The challenge therefore is to build not only deep knowledge but also to build it in a way that allows for a flexible and creative use of this knowledge in novel contexts. How do we do that? And how can technology help? In this keynote address, Prof. Manu Kapur will first highlight key trends that force us to rethink what and how we teach, followed by developments from the field of the learning sciences to derive implications—theoretical and practical—for the design of learning. Using his research on Productive Failure, he will illustrate how we can design for learning that develops both deep knowledge and creativity, and prepare our children to take on the uncertain future that awaits them.


Manu Kapur is a Professor and Chair of Learning Sciences and Higher Education at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. An engineer by bachelors training, Manu was a footballer-turned-pre-university-mathematics-teacher before receiving his doctorate in instructional technology and media from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, where he also completed a Master of Science in Applied Statistics. He also has a Master of Education from the NIE. Manu is widely known for his research on Productive Failure, and has done extensive work in real-field ecologies of mathematics classrooms in Singapore and internationally. His research has attracted high profile media interest (e.g., TIME, The Australian, The Straits Times, The Times of India, The CONVERSATION, etc.) and multi-million dollar funding around the world. He has been invited to present major keynote addresses around the world, and his work has been published in the top journals in the field.
